There is nothing quite like the magic of Christmas. Most of us know the sentiment well, but what is it made of?
I’d say “Christmas magic” is equal parts nostalgia and whimsy… For me it typically comes in the form of a Charlie Brown special or those big colored lights that could burn the house down (you know the ones). Combine the two, and I’m powerless.
Macy’s “Another Miracle on 34th Street”
In typical Macy’s fashion “Another Miracle on 34th Street” features a star studded cast but with a seasonal addition—Kris Kringle from the 1947 classic, Miracle on 34th Street.
Why it works
Macy’s brings a classic back to life and that in and of itself seems magical. The message is even more powerful. The spirit of Christmas lives on through the actions and efforts of normal people—a letter to Santa or a donation to make wishes come true.
What you can do
- Support a cause
- Create a nostalgic feeling – Remind your customers of happy memories (childhood, time with family, young love, etc).
- Decorate – Capturing the magic of Christmas can be as easy as decorating. It may be a bit late to discuss this year’s decorations, since some of us are already anticipating taking them down, but I would argue that there is no better time than now to plan for next year. While the holiday season is still fresh in your mind, take time to identify your strengths, weaknesses and potential opportunities. Put together a plan for next year. Remember one can buy a whole lot of “Christmas magic” on December 26th when it’s 75% off!
